Squarespace or WordPress for your Small Business Website?

Are you a small business owner or entrepreneur with a local audience looking for the perfect platform to build your website? Let's compare Squarespace and WordPress.

TLDR: Choosing between Squarespace and WordPress for your small business website? Here’s the quick rundown:

Squarespace is user-friendly with a drag-and-drop interface (Fluid Engine), making it easy for beginners and professionals to create and maintain beautiful websites. It's an all-in-one solution with integrated hosting, templates, and support. I chose Squarespace because I love sending my clients off with a website they can easily update and maintain on their own.

WordPress offers limitless customization and scalability with thousands of plugins and themes. It’s ideal for those who are comfortable with some technical know-how and are looking for advanced functionality and design flexibility.

For small business owners who want a professional-looking site they can manage themselves after launch, Squarespace is a solid choice. If you need more customization and don't mind a steeper learning curve, WordPress might be the way to go.

Getting Started: Ease of Use

Squarespace is like that cozy, welcoming home where everything is already in its place. Fluid Engine, it’s drag-and-drop interface is incredibly user-friendly, making it easy for anyone without coding experience to create attractive websites. While it's known for being beginner-friendly, don't underestimate its potential for professional-grade websites.

WordPress, on the other hand, is like that fixer-upper with endless potential. It's highly customizable but comes with a steeper learning curve. You'll need to get comfortable with plugins, themes, and some coding to truly make your site shine, much like learning how to wield a hammer and saw in your DIY home improvement projects.

Pros of Squarespace:

  • User-friendly interface: Perfect for beginners and professionals alike.

  • All-in-one platform: Hosting, templates, and support all in one place.

  • Beautiful templates: Professionally designed options right out of the box.

  • Customizable for professionals: Can be modified to create highly sophisticated designs.

Pros of WordPress:

  • Limitless customization: With thousands of plugins and themes.

  • Community support: A massive community means tons of tutorials and forums.

  • Scalability: Ideal for growing businesses with complex needs.

Design Flexibility

The built-in style editor lets you easily tweak fonts, colors, and layouts. For those seeking a truly unique look, professional Squarespace designers (like me 👋) can bring your vision to life, creating a website that looks great and is easy for you to maintain after launch.

WordPress is akin to having a custom contractor at your disposal. You can start with basic themes and customize them endlessly. If you want unique features or functionality, WordPress gives you the tools (and freedom) to create exactly what you envision.

Why Choose Squarespace for Design?

  • Instantly beautiful designs: No need for extensive customization.

  • Responsive templates: Automatically* adjust for mobile devices. *Fluid Engine does require a little tweaking for tablet view.

  • Built-in design tools: No additional software needed.

  • Professional customization: Option to hire Squarespace experts for unique designs.

Why Choose WordPress for Design?

  • Endless possibilities: From simple blogs to complex e-commerce sites.

  • Wide range of themes: Both free and premium options are available.

  • Customizable code: This is for those who know their way around HTML/CSS/JavaScript.

Functionality & Features

Both platforms come loaded with features but cater differently depending on your needs.

Squarespace is great if you're looking for an all-in-one solution where everything works together seamlessly. Need an online store, a blog, a course, or a portfolio? Squarespace has you covered without needing extra plugins or third-party integrations.

WordPress shines when it comes to functionality through its vast plugin ecosystem. Want advanced SEO tools? Membership sites? Custom forms? There's likely a plugin (or ten) for that!

Key Features of Squarespace:

  • Integrated e-commerce, courses, blogs, porfolios, and member sites: Easy setup; no plugins needed.

  • Built-in SEO tools: Basic but effective optimization options perfect for small businesses.

  • 24/7 customer support: Help is always available when you need it.

  • Easy maintenance: Small business owners can manage their sites without ongoing developer support.

Key Features of WordPress:

  • Extensive plugin library: Over 50,000 plugins available.

  • Advanced SEO capabilities: Plugins like Yoast SEO offer robust options.

  • Open-source flexibility: Modify and extend functionality as needed.

  • Requires technical support: Most business owners need an on-call developer for maintenance and troubleshooting.

Cost Considerations

Let's talk dollars and cents because budget matters!

Squarespace offers straightforward pricing plans that include hosting, templates, and support—all bundled together. This simplicity can be pretty appealing if you want predictable costs without worrying about additional expenses. Plus, small business owners can maintain their Squarespace sites after launch, eliminating the need for a designer on a monthly retainer.

WordPress itself is free, but you'll need to pay for hosting and premium themes/plugins. Costs can add up quickly depending on your requirements. Additionally, being an open-source platform means things can break easily, so most business owners will need an on-call developer to handle issues when they arise, adding to the overall cost.

Squarespace Pricing:

  • Personal Plan: $16/month

  • Business Plan: $23/month (my go-to)

  • Commerce Basic: $28/month

  • Commerce Advanced: $52/month

WordPress Costs:

  • Hosting: Ranges from $4-$45/month depending on the provider.

  • Premium Themes: Typically $20-$500 one-time fee.

  • Plugins: These are free to several hundred dollars annually based on functionality.

  • Developer support: Varies but can be significant for ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting.

Final Thoughts

I chose Squarespace because I love the idea of sending my clients off with a website they can easily update and maintain on their own. Squarespace is a user-friendly platform that makes it easy for you to maintain, update, and monitor your website independently. In addition, it has excellent built-in search engine optimization (SEO) capabilities to keep your website at the top of a Google search. I love that Squarespace sites are mobile responsive and easy to customize to match my clients' aesthetic. Having experience with HTML, Dreamweaver, Wix, and WordPress, I've exclusively used Squarespace since 2018, and it consistently meets my needs and those of my clients. Occasionally, someone may need a website feature that requires a different platform than Squarespace, in which case, I’m happily give a recommendation for the platform that best suits them.

So, which platform should you choose? It depends on your specific needs:

  • Squarespace might be your best bet if you value simplicity, aesthetic appeal right out of the box, and an all-inclusive package with the potential for professional customization. It's particularly attractive for small business owners who want a professional-looking site they can maintain themselves after launch.

  • WordPress could be the way to go if you're looking for unparalleled customization options and scalability for future growth and are okay with the technical aspects or the potential need for ongoing developer support.

Remember that there's no one-size-fits-all answer here. Both platforms have strengths; it's about finding what aligns best with your vision, goals, and maintenance capabilities. Whether you're launching a new business or revamping an existing one—choosing the right website builder is crucial in setting yourself up for success!
